New on here

Hi all

I've been on my fertility road for 2 years now. I have one wee boy who is 4  with no problems conceiving. Started trying again in 2007 - 2 ruptured ectopics within 8 months has me on IVF. I had IVF in the Royal in Belfast and had very strong response with 41 eggs and 36 embryos. All on hold as had OHSS. I've had 2 Frozen embryo transfers in May and Oct 08. Found out second one failed last Wednesday so I'm back to the drawing board.

I'm thinking of going for a blast transfer for my round 3. I still have 20 embryos left.  Does anyone know what clinics do Blast transfers? As far as my research goes is it seems to be SIMS and HARI. Though HARI have on their website if you have embryos frozen elsewhere they won't do it until these are used up.

Cost and waiting lists are the other 2 issues. Any info on these would be much appreciated. Hope to get to know you all over the next while

Re: New on here
Hi Clodagh,
Welcome to the NISIG discussion forum and I hope you will find the help and support you need here. A second frozen embryo failure must have been hard for you, coming relatively soon after your first transfer and failure. Secondary infertility is a difficult situation to be in and has all its own types of problems not least of which I'm sure is the fact that people can be less sympathetic because you already have a child. However, you are still experiencing the frustration and sadness associated with any kind of infertility and still want to resolve your problems. I take it from what you said that you are probably living in or around the north of Ireland? I don't personally have any experience of clinics in that area but I would encourage you to contact the two you mentioned, by phone rather than checking their websites, to see if they are in a position to do a blast transfer with the embryos you have left (great number by the way!). If it's a cross border situation there may be legal considerations to take on board as Belfast and other areas within the North of Ireland would obviously be covered by UK law and it may or may not have a bearing on what you are hoping to do. The cost factor is high in the south of Ireland and waiting lists can be long also; however again I think your best bet would be to check directly with the clinics as they will have the most up to date info.
Keep us posted on how you are doing and I'm sure there are others who may have experienced a situation like your own who can give you some additional advice.

Re: New on here
Hi Katherine
Thanks for the reply. There are only 2 places in the North that do IVF the Royal and Origin and neither do blast transfers. I've emailed HARI about waiting lists and if they would accept me but they haven't got back to me yet. When you say waiting lists are long is this for both private and public treatment and if so can you give me an idea of how long people are waiting?
Regards

Re: New on here

Dear Katherine,

Very sorry to hear about your unsuccessful frozen transfers.  I think you are right to consider Blast as the success rates seem much higher.  I was treated at HARI myself and found them very good, but to my knowledge their waiting list is about three months or so.  Believe it or not there is no public IVF provision here so there is no public waiting list!  HARI are pretty conservative though, and I don't know whether they'd be willing to take you on as a patient unless you had used up all of your existing embryos.  So I think it would be well worth trying SIMS, which seem to be a bit more liberal in their approach.  Best of luck with it and keep in touch to let us all know you you get on.  Sparky
