Re: Cost of Infertility Treatment and lack of Government Support
It's not easy to find info on this, that's for sure!

It looks to me like they've gone ahead with the restriction that, from March 2009, drugs will only be subsidised up to a total of three fresh IVF cycles. My understanding is that this begins in March 09 and any cycles done prior to that date won't count, but it's very tough on those couples who are only starting out now.

Here's a Parliamentary Question put by George Lee in Sept 09 and the reply he received in the Dail relating to this whole area:

http://www.hse.ie/eng/about/PersonalPQ/PQ/2009_PQ_Responses/September_2009/Sept_16/George_Lee_PQ_30665-09_-_Funding_for_Certain_Fertility_Drugs.pdf

I think it's a bit disingenuous to be saying that no-one has been refused to date - not many people would manage three fresh cycles between March and September! Also ... I wonder what happens re meds for IUIs and FETs.

Re: Cost of Infertility Treatment and lack of Government Support

hey my name is selina from kerry i am 24 and las august was diagnosed wit blocked fallopian tubes i wnet for the ivf consultation in cork and was told in order to proceed wit the treatment i would have to have further surgery to block the tubes near the womb to avoid fluid dripping into the womb from the tubes i then had consultation for surgery where doc suggested that she could try opening them if they looked ok and if not block them i agreed and was eletated because the last sugery said that everything looked perfect but jus blocked tubes. i must admit i got my hopes up slightly and had sugery las friday she said she had nt seen tubes as bad as mine in a long time so she had to block them.so here i am 24 and double sterilised!

i have 2kids already and i hate when people say oh at least you got them. i know that already i wouldnt mind if i didnt want another baby but the fact that i do nothing can take that want away.and esp coz i want a baby wit my husband as i dont got any with him.i would have been entitled to a reduced cost cycle (as i am on medical card) if i had only 1 child, but because i have two i have to pay full price.whats killing me is that i am technically ready to go for ivf but i dont have the money i am so desperate i would crawl into sewers to clean them kinda thing.evewrywhere i look theres a pregnant woman or a newborn.i jus wanted to get married plan the baby get pregnant and live happily ever after.wi know things dont ever go like that but for other people they do.i just dont know if i have the strength to endure more heartache cause every day i little part of me dies

Re: Cost of Infertility Treatment and lack of Government Support
Hi Selina, I'm really sorry to see how tough you are finding things. You're right that the longing for a baby doesn't go away just because you have a child (or children) already, although it's a different kind of pain to primary infertility (when you've no children). I'm sorry people are telling you at least you have them ... I'm sure you're very glad to have them, but it's a huge shock to have your fertility taken away and your options and plans changed so drastically.

The cost of fertility treatment is a hge burden for many couples who suffer infertility. I hope you find a way to save up for the treatment and that it is successful for you. Meanwhile, try to speak to someone who understands what you are going through. I think that is the best way forward, learning that you are not alone in your desperation and your pain and finding ways of coping with what is happening to you. Is there perhaps a counsellor linked to the hospital where you had the procedure?

I hope you have a happy ending to your story Selina.

Re: Cost of Infertility Treatment and lack of Government Support

Hi there, I am working for a new consumer show on RTE television and would love to chat with some people about the cost of IVF in Ireland. Ideally we want to hear people's experiences, good and bad. We would love to interview couples about the whole process, the highs and the lows. We also want positive stories of couples who were successful. In particular we want to look at the costs involved and hear about people who have gone abroad for treatment. The show will be a live show with an audience and as this is such a huge issue for many people across Ireland we would hope to enlighten people about the whole process before they start down the road to fertility treatment. We would hope that some of the issues we cover may actually help couples who are thinking of going for IVF, giving them an insight into how other people dealt with the journey, the best roads to take and what to avoid. We hope to hear from some of the people on this very informative website soon. Thanks for taking time out to read this. Yvonne, The Consumer Show 01 4512547 or email consumers@rte.ie
