PCOS newbie
Hi ladies :)

(whoops, this post turned out to be epic - sorry about that, seems I had a lot to get off my mind!)

I just joined up this evening. I was diagnosed with PCOS over a year ago. I came off the pill with the hope of ttc and had my clearblue fertility monitor, my what to expect book, my folic acid, - the whole works! The naivety when I look back at it now!!

After two periods, I didn't have another one for a year. At that point I knew I had PCOS and the options I was given by my doctor were limited.

The day I first found out I had PCOS the doctor immediately started talking to me about fertility clinics, clomid etc. I came out of there shaking. I went in thinking I needed something to get my periods back after the pill had thrown them out of whack and came out with a referral to a fertility clinic.

I was especially shocked because the doctor had originally told me that my lack of period was just a reaction to the pill.

Everything I read after that seemed to suggest that change in diet and upping the exercise may do wonders for PCOS. When that didn't work I did acupuncture, herbs, the usual.

So now I find myself in a place where I've had one period in year and to be honest, when a doctor asks how long we've been trying to get pregnant, what can I say? Well actually we can't because I'm not ovulating? I don't even feel like we have been trying, if you know what I mean, because it's not actually possible right now.

I was on metformin but because I'm not insulin resistant, there was a question over what benefit that would have for me. I was extremely sick on it and began itching like crazy on it one day, rang my doctor and she told me to come off it just in case it was some kind of reaction.

So, our next option is clomid and I can't even begin to get my head around what that step will involve. To be honest, after researching it, I'm not even sure I want to take that step. My husband is terrified of it and would prefer we just go straight down the adoption route.

I'm a little lost to be honest. I haven't been able to get a doctor to give me the straight up answers I need about these things. I just feel really pushed in to clomid as this wonder drug (which I know it is for so many people) with very little information being given as to the side effects.

I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a counsellor or someone who can talk me through my options in relation to all of this? I've been reading and researching until my eyes hurt and would love some help from people in the know about this kind of thing.

Thanks for reading if you managed to get this far! And sorry again about the length of the post!! x

Re: PCOS newbie

Hi Zass

Well I can understand once you get started you can't stop... Its good to unload.

Sounds like its been very difficult for you guys. I don't know much  about PCOS. But I do undertand the difficulty to conceive. It is a hard and difficult road. Can be very lonely at times, especially family celebrations etc...

There is a few things you can do. Counselling is avavilbe and I think in most of the clinics offer it to patients but if your not attending one thats no help. If you ring the NISIG supportline 1890 647 444 they can give you information. Not sure were you are in the country, there are NISIG support meetings in Dublin Limerick and Cork. You can get to chat to others in the same boat and find out about different roads you guys can take. Its very easy relaxed gathering. This is where I found the support and information i needed and will be always greatful to the members who helped me through the bad days.  Also you can find out Clomid.. I took it and had no side affects... A bit emotional but no more than usual when your TTC.

As for adoption... we started the process as we were told by another couple it takes so long to get started depending were you live in the country. So even give the HSE a call and find out inforamtion.

Remember be kind to yourself, Try and get to a NISIG meeting and post again,

Talk care
