Sperm donation in Ireland

Hi. myself and my partner recently got bad news. He is infertile. as many of you here may relate to, its hard to deal with. It felt like the doctor cut off my legs and told me i had to learn to walk. We are unaware of so much. My own G.p doesnt seem to have much information for me even. The option we think we are interested in is ivf or i.u.i using a sperm donar. I dont know how to go about this , how much it costs, whats involved and waiting lists.

I find it all very hard, and surreal.

if anyone has similar stories or any info it would be great. x

Re: Sperm donation in Ireland

Pinklady: I'm also in a similiar position to you.I have been a public patient for the last  2 years getting tests etc.
My OH has  a very low sperm count and motility is not great. I was advised to contact the SIMS Clinic in Dublin  as they do sperm donation. I have my first consultation tomorrow.  I'm as much in the dark about all this but hopefully will get some enlightenment tomorrow!

I would advise you to have  a look at their webpage to give you some  ideas of what it costs . If you give them a ring they will also send you out reading material x

Re: Sperm donation in Ireland

Hi Ladies,

I'm going tell you that there things you can do to help yourselves through the bad days and YES, it hard, crape and many more things but I wont type !!!!!!.

If your having a bad day give the supportline a call 1890 647 444 Monday - Friday    7.15pm - 9.15pm and the other is try and make it to the Donor meeting. The next it's on the 21st May in Dublin city centre. For details conact the supportline. Also the DC Network in the Uk is a large support group with over 20 years of experince of the journey we have found ourselves on. They run weekend prepartion courses to help people to come to the decision to head on the donor road.

On another thread Repromed was mentioned. They are based in Sanyford, Dublin. Dr D Keane talked at last DC meetings so might be worth looking up the site.

This is how I managed to work through my fears and issues of what I/ we faced. I have two beauiful identica lgirls. So remember dreams can come through. Oliva  from the DC network said at one of our meetings we are 1% donor and 99 % normal family = my family. And it is so true, we dont think about it all the time. It just makes us a bit different but families come in all shapes and forms these days

Hope to see you at the next meeting on the 21st.

Take care

A& C: Thanks for that information and will consider coming to the meeting. At the moment we are still testing to see if there is an option of using our own sperm but we are going down the route of donar sperm as backup.....I have  a feeling this will be the route we will have to take and I know there are so many issues around getting sperm donation. we are due to meet with a councillor very shortly to discuss this route

@PinkLady: as a public patient I have been 3 years faffing around waiting to get seen for this test and that test....so have taken the bull by the horns and gone private. I know the Sims Clinic do sperm donation but I don't think Hari (if you are a public patient) do this. I'm new to all this so do stand corrected on this information.
