Help, need some advice

Hi All,

I'm so frustrated with our Clinic at the moment and don't know where to turn.  We had a review recently with our Doc, I came out completely depressed.  We've had 2 failed IVFs and were planning on going for our 3rd go but recently I've been doing more research online and found out about various tests that can also be done, like Natural Killer Cells (Antibodies in your blood that attack the eggs) and Cervical Mucus tests (sometimes can attack the sperm so it can't get near the egg).  While I know there is not concrete evidence to support these findings, our Doc was completely dismissive about it.  She kept saying we've been very unlucky, she then went on to say that we might be luckier on our next cycle or even our 5th cycle!!  She came across to me as a money grabber rather than someone trying to help us concieve.  The only suggestion she had was to go for another laparoscopy although I had one 6 years ago and everything was normal.

I just don't know where to go from here, I don't have any faith in our clinic but live down the country and they are the only fertility clinic around.  I'm so angry and frustrated, just wondering if any of you had any advice???  Thanks for reading my rant!!

Covie xx

Re: Help, need some advice

Hi Covie,

My sympathys on your failed cycles, it takes strength and courage to keep going. I can only imagine your frustration, it's terrible not to be listened to or taken seriously. Obviously, there's not much point going ahead with another cycle with that clinic if you're not happy with them, but maybe you should enquire some more about their official policy on the issues you mentioned before you give up on them entirely. There may be another doctor there who may be more receptive to your queries.  You don't say where you are located but maybe you could find another clinic you could get to. Also, your doctor could have a point about the lap, things can change in 6 years. I hope you will be feeling better about things before long.

All the best

Ger

Re: Help, need some advice

Hi Geraldine,

Thanks for replying, I'm waiting to get a call back from the Doc to ask more specific questions about the tests, but it's impossible to get to talk to them.  I'm based in the West and unfortunately this is the only Clinic available.  The thing with the Laparoscopy is, in those 6 years I've never been pregnant, never miscarried or had a D & C so I don't think much could have changed.  I did phone the Doc who preformed the Lap in the Blackrock Clinic and he agreed with me, he thought it was unnessesary to do another one.  It's so frustrating, especially not being able to discuss it with my Doc, I phoned this day last week, she was supposed to phone me back but what they did was go straight to my voicemail (If you put the number 5 before a mobile number, it automatically goes straight through to the answer machine)  they did this twice, as I had the phone in my hand both times waiting for the call.  Then they don't answer when I tried to call back immediately.  I phoned again the following day and was told someone would phone me back, but I'm still waiting!!!!  I'd love to tell them to stuff it but they are the only ones around.

I'm going for acupuncture every week and it's the only thing keeping me sane at the moment, it's the only thing giving me any bit of hope at the moment.

Cheers

Covie xx

Re: Help, need some advice

They do sound like poor communicators - is it always like that? The only other suggestion I have is to put your complaints in writing and copy it to the relevant authorities as well - they usually take more notice of things in writing. Also, it might help to go back to your GP, they might be able to do something. Hopefully someone from your own area might join in this thread - have you tried the rollercoaster.ie discussion boards? There might be a thread for your clinic there.

I know what you mean about the acupuncture, it used to transform me from walking basketcase to reasonably functioning human being every time!

All the best,

Ger
