Need your advice!

Hi all,

I'm very new to this so i'm very green around the ears. I am trying desperately to find the appropriate clinic to commence ivf treatment but i'm getting very overwhelmed and confused. Can you offer any advice. There is a Mr Declan Keane attached to a clinic in Sandyfort and there is amazing feedback and testimonials online for him but i'm not sure if it's just a consultancy clinic and they refer you somewhere else? Is anyone familiar? We have also being looking at Clane and Sims but some feedback online suggests these clinics are formal and unfriendly when it comes to the medical staff.

We are in the very lucky position of knowing exactly what is causing our infertility and that ivf is a very viable treatment for us so i am hoping that success rates for clinics aren't the most important thing for us. Am i being naive? I would appreciate any advice you could give us in narrowing down possible avenues based on your experiences.

Than You in advance

Niamh

Re: Need your advice!

Maybe ye are all sick of going through this with every new person that comes along. It's not a problem. Cheers.

Re: Need your advice!
Hi Niamh,

I tried to reply to your initial post a few times, but I think the server must have been down over Christmas. Choosing a clinic is difficult, but as you know the root cause of your infertility it might be worth contacting a number of clinics to see if they specialize in your particular cause. Most clinics have similar success rates so my advise would be to consider the one closest to where you live. Treatment can be extremely stressful involving lots of early morning appointments and with traffic being a real headache at that hour, you could eliminate this stress. We did 5 IVFs in the one clinic and we didn't become known to the staff on first name terms until number 3. So don't expect too much personalized care, the clinics are extremely busy and you will be just another patient, just keep focussed on the outcome. It is also stressful for the nurses and doctors who work at the clinics and like everybody else, they can have off days. The best clinic is the clinic which works for you, unfortunately this may not be the first clinic you try with and it can be a case of trial and error.
I wish you the very best of luck

Re: Need your advice!

Hi Niamh,

Hope you are keeping well. Just to let you know the web site is very quite at times. Alot of people view mesages but dont answer a post.

So were to begin, all your questions are what most people have when setting out on this road. I feel it is hard to explain feelings of how people have gotten on in the different clinics through a post . They all have there up and downs. It's a personal choice.

There is a NISIG meeting this Saturday in Dublin. For time and location and time contact 1890 647 444 in the evenings. I found the information and support one of the most important part of our ferility  journey. We are blessed with twins through donor egg. So dreams do come true. Take each day at a time. It can be a long and sometimes slow process.

Take care & best of luck

Cats

Re: Need your advice!
Hi Niamh,

I think Clive makes a very good point that it'd be worth contacting various clinics to see do they specialise in your particular area, or even ask online about people's experiences with your particular issue. I think in general, though, you'll find people to praise and criticise every clinic! I personally was at one of the Dublin clinics for 6 IUI cycles and 5 IVF cycles, without success, but I would still recommend them to someone starting out. (I eventually had success in a clinic in England, doing treatment that was unavailable in Ireland at the time.) Different styles suit different people, too, so what is right for somebody else mightn't be your cup of tea at all. I agree with Clive that ease of access is an important factor and if, perhaps, you're choosing between two clinics that are relatively close to where you live, you could perhaps consider making an initial consult appt with the both of them and seeing what sort of a feel you get for the place, before committing to a cycle. My husband and I attended an alternative clinic after numerous failed cycles with our first clinic, but the 2nd place just didn't feel right for us, so we went back and did another cycle with the original clinic before eventually moving to the clinic abroad. And yet I know loads of people who've had success and are very happy with this 2nd clinic.

Hope you make it along to the NISIG meeting at the weekend for more opinions!
